The Sleep Cycle

The average human spends one third of their life sleeping. So it’s important to understand the dynamic of sleep and why need it.
While you’re asleep, your brain undergoes a number of patterns referred to as the sleep cycle. It is predictable and can be separated into two elements – NREM (non-rapid eye movement) and REM.

NREM stage One: This stage is very brief and lasts up seven minutes. Eye movements slow down considerably and while in this state of light sleep, you are very much susceptible to being woken up.

NREM stage Two: The light sleeping continues and the brain produces sleep spindles (sudden bursts of brain activity).There is a decrease in blood pressure and other metabolic functions begin to slow. This stage can last up to 20 minutes and is essentially a preparatory stage for you to ender deep sleep.

NREM stage three: Often this stage (along with rem sleep) is referred to as the deep sleep. During this stage it becomes harder for you to be woken up by any disturbances. Lasting up to 45 minutes the brain waves begin to slow and if you do manage to be waken up by disturbances, you may find yourself feeling disorientated and may feel as though you haven’t had a good quality sleep.

NREM stage 4: The final stage starts about 90 minutes after initially falling asleep, and each REM stage can last from 10 minutes to 1 hour. An average adult has five to six REM cycles each night. Paradoxically, in the final stage of sleep, the brain shows heightened activity (as much as when you are awake) though your muscles are paralysed. Powerful dreams happen during this stage and the eyes begin to show rapid movement in different directions.
